Ascent is mostly experimental electronic, the first two songs being ambient drum and bass. The atmosphere for Ascent is what makes the album. It has an innocence in the way that the tracks seem somewhat raw, and in sentimental terms, are honest and somehow identifiable. Ascent, like Displacement, had a great deal of b-sides removed, tracks from previous albums that were never released. The cover has an image of Lain, from Serial Experiments Lain, in a nostalgic sepia color, with Memex printed below and to the right. As previously mentioned, both the artwork and the tracks have a sentimental quality that feels very personal.
